Purpose
A seminar for physicians, nurses, EMT-Paramedics,and other allied healthcare professionals
Learning Objectives - Registration Required
The purpose of this symposium is to identify pediatric clinical advances for the healthcare professional in disaster and trauma settings.
Topics
1. Participants will be able to identify and describe opportunities to enhance team efforts at improved pediatric patient safety. This will encompass the unique needs and different dynamics of the pediatric population.
2. Identify the needs of children as a vulnerable population in a disaster ot terrorism event. Anticipate the unique needs of children in an attack and incorporate careful planning specific to age group.
3. Define the special needs population. Recognize the complications common to special needs population. Describe the assessment and treatment priorities specific to special needs children.
4. Recognize ways to improve communication between the anxious parent, pediatric patient and the ED staff.
5. Describe the pathophysiology of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in the pediatric patient. What are the signs and symptoms? What are the treatment options for pediatric DKA?
6. Identify the signs and symptoms of child abuse. How does a healthcare provider examine a pediatric patient for possible child abuse? What are the guidelines for treatment?
7. Identify when to call DCFS and what documentation is necessary before, during and after DCFS involvement?
