Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park while visiting the hospital?

There is ample free visitor parking available at the hospital. In addition, free valet parking services are offered at the main entrance for patients and visitors. Monday through Friday, from 6 am to 8:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm.

Where can I wait while my family member is in surgery?

While a patient undergoes a surgical procedure, visitors are asked to wait in the surgical waiting lounge, located on the third floor of the hopital and accessible from the elevators located in the main lobby.

What happens when surgery is over?

After a surgical procedure, the surgeon will update the patient's contact person. At that time, the patient is transferred to our recovery area to be monitored for any post surgery needs. Once the patient is recovered (which can take up to an hour or more after the surgeon speaks with you), a nurse will let you know where you may visit with the patient. Outpatient surgery patients will be reunited with family members in preparation for discharge.

What if my family member is taken to the Intensive Care unit?

After certain types of surgery, a patient will be moved to the Intensive Critical Care Unit (ICCU). In this case, the ICCU becomes the patient's room.

What does Condell's extended recovery area provide for patients?

Our surgical department includes state-of-the-art operating suites and an extended recovery unit--all on the third floor. Many patients remain in the extended recovery unit overnight or even until discharge. The unit is divided into private rooms with amenities similar to our inpatient rooms. Each private room has a telephone, TV and visiting hours for family and friends.

Where can I make telephone calls?

A telephone is available at the reception desk in the surgical waiting lounge for local calls. Personal cellular telephones may be used in the surgical waiting lounge and within the hospital, except in posted areas of restriction, such as patient rooms and testing areas.

Where can I get a meal or snack?

The Cafe' is located on the hospital's lower level and is open seven days a week from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. The Coffee Shop is located on the first floor, just off the main lobby, and is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 4:30 pm., and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. A vending area is located on the lower level near the Cafe'. Centre Lights Deli, open daily, is located in Centre Club, within walking distance from Condell.

Where can I get a gift for my family member or friend?

The Gift Corner is located on the hospital's first floor, just off the main lobby and adjacent to the Coffee Shop. The shop offers a wide selection of gift items for all ages, including fresh flowers, candy and magazines, and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 pm weekends.

Is there a chapel in the hospital?

Yes. Our Chapel is open 24 hours a day. It is located on the first floor off the hospital main lobby, just past the Gift Corner and Coffee Shop.

What happens when I arrive with my family member or friend who is scheduled for surgery?

Upon arrival to the surgical area (located on the third floor of the hospital and accessible from the elevators located in the main lobby), patients and their visitors are asked to register at the surgical reception desk. From there, one visitor can accompany the patient into the surgical admitting area.

How will I be updated as the surgery progresses?

At the surgical reception desk, we will ask for one person to be identified as the main contact person for the patient. This person will receive periodic updates on the patient's condition and the progress of the procedure. If the contact person leaves the waiting area, please notify the receptionist so that any communication from the surgical team may be provided when the contact person returns.

What are the visiting hours?

Family members may be with you the day of surgery. While you are in the operating and recovery rooms, they should wait in the Surgical Waiting Area located on the third floor. When you return to your room, they are notified and may join you.

Visiting hours on most medical and surgical units are 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some units have more restrictive priveleges to assure patients have sufficient recovery time. Please check with your family member's nurse for the visiting hours on their unit.

When can I expect my family member to be discharged?

When your family member's physician determines they are ready to be discharged, he or she will meet with them to discuss their release and follow-up care, including return check-ups, necessary prescriptions and recuperative needs.

Check-out times are scheduled before 11 am. Your family member should be ready to leave their room to go home at this time. When they are discharged, you or a staff member will accompany them to the discharge desk.

What if I can't pick up my loved one at the time of discharge?

If you are not able to pick up your family member at or before 11 am on the day of discharge, a staff member may escort them to our comfortable V.I.P. (Very Important Patient) Discharge Lounge, located in the Intergenerational Day Center (IDC) on Condell Medical Center's campus, to wait until you arrive.

While in the V.I.P. Discharge Lounge, your family member will receive meals. The lounge is open until 6 pm without charge.

What is a patient representative?

Your family member's patient representative is a confidential liaison between your family and the hospital, appointed to act on the patient's behalf to help facilitate solutions to patient problems, concerns and other needs. Condell patient representatives are available days and evenings Monday through Friday, and during the day on weekends. To contact a patient representative, please call ext. 5443 or dial "0" to reach the operator from a house telephone and ask to be connected with a patient representative. If you reach voicemail, please leave a message and call will be returned.
