Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine Department provides therapeutic and diagnostic services using medical radioistopes, a medically safe amount of radioactive medicine. These imaging studies are performed to evaluate patients with malignant disorders, endocrine diseases, infections and trauma. Therapeutic procedures are also offered, including radioiodine therapy for thyroid diseases and radionuclide therapy for pain relief in patients with bone metastases are also offered. Nuclear Cardiology performs imaging procedures for assessment of myocardial perfusion and ventricular contractility.


Hours of Operation:
Monday through Friday, 7 am to 6 pm

To schedule an appointment, call Central Scheduling at (847) 990-5000. A physician's order is required.


When You Arrive:
After registering, you may be asked to change into a patient gown. You may receive an injection or take some oral medication to help visualize your internal organs. Most exams take approximately 45 minutes; however, Nuclear Cardiology and bone scan exams are done in two steps; therefore, you should plan on spending approximately four hours at the hospital.


During the Exam:
You will be asked to lie on a special table and safety straps may be applied. The table will move as the exam progresses. The gamma camera may slowly rotate around you as images are produced.


After the Exam:
When the exam is finished, the technologist will assist you off the table. You should feel no discomfort or side effects from the testing. The images will be interpreted by a radiologist and a typed report will be sent to your physician within 3-5 days from the time you were examined.
