Digital Mammography

Learn more about how you can protect yourself from breast cancer by clicking here.

Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system and high-contrast, high-resolution film for examination of the breasts.

Condell Medical Center's mammography program is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ensuring high quality screening and diagnostic examinations. Screening mammography (women having no breast complaints) can be performed at Condell Medical Center and Condell Imaging Center in Gurnee.

Important! DIAGNOSTIC mammography, for patients with breast symptoms including lumps, discharge, dimpling, retraction and pain, is only offered at Condell Medical Center.

To Schedule an Appointment:
To schedule a screening or diagnostic mammogram or breast ultrasound appointment at Condell Medical Center, call Central Scheduling at (847) 990-5000. Condell Medical Center requires you to provide only the name of your family physician for screening mammography. A physician's order is required for diagnostic mammography and breast ultrasound.

Please note, for your convenience, if you are in need of a screening mammogram only, you may find additional appointment availability at the Gurnee Imaging Center. In addition, all mammograms completed at the Gurnee Imaging Center are sent to the hospital to be read by the board certified radiologist on staff. To make an appointment, simply call Central Scheduling at (847) 990-5000 or the Gurnee Imaging Center at (847) 599-7365.

Please consider the following when scheduling:

  • Schedule your mammogram for a time when you do not have your menstrual period. You may find that that the increased breast tenderness makes the necessary compression more uncomfortable.
  • Mammography is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, except in special circumstances.
  • Do not use powder, lotion, or deodorant on the day of the exam.
  • Bring with you, or arrange to have sent to Condell, any previous mammograms taken at facilities other than Condell Medical Center. It is important that your previous films and reports be available for the radiologist for comparison.

When You Arrive:
After registering, you will be asked to change into a patient gown.

During the Exam:
During a mammogram, the technologist will position each breast between two plates in the x-ray unit. The plates compress the breast tissue to allow for the clearest image of your breast. While the compression may be somewhat uncomfortable, it does not harm the breast tissue. The technologist will take two images of each breast. Additional images may be required to include all breast tissue. Most exams take approximately 30 minutes.

After the Exam:
When the exam is finished, the technologist will escort you to the dressing area to change back into your regular clothes.

The images will be interpreted by a radiologist and a typed report will be sent to your physician within 3-5 days from the time you were examined.
